McLouth teacher decides to retire mid year

by Dennis Sharkey

McLouth USD 342 is now on the search for a new social studies teacher for 7-9 grades.

Teacher Garon Gardner submitted his resignation effective at the end of the semester last week and it was accepted by the board after a brief closed session last week according to Superintendent Steve Splichal.

Splichal said Gardner will retire to pursue other interests. Gardner has been with the district for more than two decades.

The board gave permission to immediately advertise for a replacement who would start in January.

Splichal said that Gardner did not indicate why he wanted to retire in the middle of the year and did not have an explanation for the timing.

“Whenever a person makes those kind of decisions it’s a private and personal decision,” he said. “Sometimes people arrive at that at different times.”

Gardner in addition to teaching has also been a football coach and has filled in many other positions.

“He would go back and a lot of people would know him,” he said. “We’ll lose some experience.”
