Finson leads Jeff West in cross country
Carrie Finson’s hard work all summer paid off with two outstanding second-place finishes to lead Jefferson West Cross Country opening the season last week.
Finson ran the Jefferson West Invitational 4K race held at Shawnee North Community Center Sept. 6 in 16:15.80 to finish ahead of two Holton runners who previously had beaten her. The meet was postponed from Sept 1 due to the extreme heat.
At the Wamego Invitational Sept. 10, one of the top meets in Kansas outside of the state meet, Finson ran 16:18.12, beating the third-place runner by more than five seconds among approximately 100 of the top runners in Class 4A representing 18 of the best programs in Kansas.
Finson’s summer included participating in a running camp in Colorado, running daily on her own, and winning the Sunflower Games half-marathon.
Two other seniors, Tyler Leed and Kegan Kennedy, and junior Austin Eckhardt earned individual medals in the boys race at Shawnee North. Leed placed 7th in 19:05.89 while Kennedy also had a sub-20 minute 5K time of 19:50.79 as the boys team placed behind Christ Prep and Sabetha.
Joining the trio to earn the 3rd-place team medals among nine complete teams at Shawnee North were: sophomore Christian Fast, senior Zac Baker, junior Micah LaCrone, and freshman Nathan Anderson.
Another medal performance was recorded by sophomore Callie Zirkle at Wamego when she finished 30th out of 66 runners in the junior varsity race.
