Get Rural Kansas

Get Rural KansasValley Falls Councilwoman Lucy Thomas, Recreation Commission Chairwoman Jeri Clark, and hardware store owner Alyse Stewart visit with Marci Penner, executive director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, at a seminar held for the purpose of giving small towns a presence on a tourist web site, getruralkansas.org.

The towns of Wilsey, Horton, Effingham, Wathena, and Troy were also represented at the seminar held Aug. 10 at The Barn Bed and Breakfast Inn near Valley Falls. Innkeeper Tom Ryan II and computer technician and deputy sheriff Tom Ryan III also participated.

The site provides an opportunity to describe one’s community through the eight elements: geography, commerce, art, cuisine, architecture, customs, history, and people. Its purpose is not to serve the local community, but rather inform tourists about the community, including its quirky and fun oddities that might make it different from any other community. The site will take some time to prepare.
