Oskaloosa man leads officers on all-night chase

by Dennis Sharkey

An Oskaloosa man is licking his wounds in the Jefferson County Jail after allegedly leading officers on an all-night chase.

Stephen J. Lane, 31, is facing 20 separate charges for an incident that began Aug. 2 and ended the next day.

Officers spotted a vehicle owned by Lane’s girlfriend that had been reported stolen. Officers began to pursue Lane and the chase was on. The chase began about 10:30 p.m. and ended about 2 a.m. when Lane crashed the car through a fence on Elm Street in Oskaloosa.

Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig said officers tried to follow Lane on foot and were assisted by a helicopter unit but were unsuccessful in locating Lane.

The next day a report came in that Lane had been spotted at the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital in Winchester.

Herrig said officers spotted Lane on a street in Winchester and a foot chase began but was short lived.

“He was ready to give up,” Herrig said. “He was tired, beaten and worn out.”

Herrig said Lane’s body was covered in scratch and scrape marks from running all night long.

Lane allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend before stealing her car.

Lane is currently being held on $100,000 bond but a previous bond on charges from another incident has been revoked.

Lane will have a preliminary hearing Aug. 26.
