Grazing workshop Saturday in Holton

Grazing expert Jim Gerrish will conduct a one-day workshop on grazing management from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the EUM Church’s Family Life Center in Holton.

The church is located at 227 Pennsylvania Street.

Gerrish, author of “Kick the Hay Habit,” and his wife, Dawn, own and operate American Grazing Lands Services out of May, Idaho. His experience includes over 20 years of beef-forage systems research and outreach while on the faculty of the University of Missouri at the University’s Forage Systems Research Center.

His research encompasses many aspects of plant-soil-animal interactions and provided the foundation for many basic principles of management intensive grazing.

The morning session is titled “Getting the most out of your pasture” and the afternoon will deal with winter grazing.

The $35 fee includes lunch but early registration is required by calling Mary Howell at 785-562-8726.

Gerrish’s research and outreach work have been recognized with awards from the American Forage and Grassland Council, Missouri Forage and Grassland Council, National Center for Appropriate Technology, USDA-NRCS, the Soil and Water Conservation Society, and Progressive Farmer.
