Wise resigns from Oskaloosa City Council

by Dennis Sharkey

Oskaloosa Councilman Allen Wise can put former in front of the title.

Wise’s resignation letter from the city council was accepted last night by the other four members of the council. His resignation was effective after the meeting on July 7.

Wise indicated that he would no longer be eligible to serve on the council because he is moving outside city limits into a home he owns in the country.

“I’m not leaving because I’m mad at anybody,” Wise joked.

Mayor Mike Boyd said one person has already expressed interest but he would not disclose who that person is, nor would he say he would recommend the person for an appointment.

The council went more than a year without pressing former councilman James Malsbury to resign and Boyd named a replacement when he did not attend meetings during that period. The seat was not filled until a month before the last election. The council had a full five members for just two months.

Wise accepted his current position on the council when he was appointed by Boyd in 2009 to fill a vacancy on the council that was created when former Mayor Judy Miller stepped down and Boyd was appointed to fill her position.

Wise, who was an incumbent in 2009, lost by one vote to Boyd. Boyd had 68 votes to Wise’s 67.
