Larry Harris, O.D.

Larry Eugene Harris, O.D., 71, Topeka, died July 12, 2011, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka.

Dr. Harris was born July 13, 1939, in Chanute, the son of Paul and Velma Anderson Harris.

He attended Kansas University, Neosho County Community College, and graduated from Illinois College of Optometry as a doctor of optometry in1962.

He entered the U.S. Army as an optometry officer in 1962 and was honorably discharged as a captain in 1967. He established an optometric practice in Topeka in March 1968 and a second office in Valley Falls in September 1969.

He continued to be an active member of the Kansas Optometric Association where he served on the board of directors from 1978 to 1984, and was chairman of the association’s legislative committee from 1982 to 1987.

He was voted KOA Optometrist of the year in 1986.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he sang in the sanctuary choir as long as his health permitted. He had served on the church’s official board and was chairman of the administrative board from 1991 to 1993. He was a large supporter and volunteer of the Sunflower Music Festival.

He retired from his private practice in April 2010.

He was married to Carol A. Kratina May 10, 1969. They divorced, but remained life-long friends.

Surviving are three children, Donna Ticknor, M.D., Bowie, Md., Amy Miller, Topeka, and Daniel Harris, Topeka; siblings, JoAnn Brinkmeyer, Oklahoma, and James Harris, Missouri; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Doyle “Dean” Harris.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at First United Methodist Church, Topeka. Private entombment of cremains will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery Columbarium.
