Alma Crawford

Alma M. Crawford, 98, Valley Falls, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at LinnWood Home Plus in Valley Falls.

She was born on Oct. 5, 1912, at Marysville, the daughter of Peter C. and Marie J. Wassenberg Smith. She graduated from Marysville High School in 1930.

Alma owned and operated Crawford Beauty Shop for many years in Valley Falls. She was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls and the church’s Altar Society. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a member and volunteer for the Valley Falls Historical Society.

She married Thomas A. Crawford on Jan. 1, 1939, at Lincoln, KS. He died on Jan. 12, 1993. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Smith and Peter Smith, and a sister, Jennie Bliss.

Survivors include a son, Jim (Jan) Crawford, McLouth; two daughters, Judie (Bob) Moore, Lenexa, and Joan Crawford, Orange, CA; a sister, Anita Sellers, Shawnee; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. July 1, 2011, at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. A Rosary followed by a visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, Jefferson County EMS District 11, Valley Falls Historical Society, or to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, and sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box 6, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
