Stephen Elston I

Stephen Osborne “Steve” Elston I, 63, rural Oskaloosa, died June 4, 2011, at his home after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Jan. 20, 1948, at Lawrence, the son of George Theodore and Angela Kathryn Haas Elston.

He worked as a bus driver for Laidlaw Transportation in Lawrence. As a jack of all trades, he had also worked as a truck driver and mechanic for many years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1968 to 1969. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 58 in Topeka.

He married Arlene Faye Reed July 19, 1968, at Williamsburg, Va. She survives at home.

He is also survived by one son, Stephen Osborne Elston, II, Oskaloosa; three daughters, Diana Hughes, Oklahoma, City, Okla., Michele Kingsbury, Oskaloosa, and Marcia Pickens, Jefferson City, Mo.; one brother, Geoffrey Elston, Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Barbara Mowder, Williamstown, and Mary Luanne Hess, Lawrence; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were June 7 at the Williamstown Assembly of God Church. Burial was at the Leavenworth Veterans National Cemetery.
