Relay for Life gets cookin’ on county courthouse grounds Friday

by Clarke Davis

The county courthouse grounds will serve as host to the Jefferson County Relay for Life this weekend that benefits the American Cancer Society.

This is the first time the event has not been held on a football and track field at a county school.

The county seat square will serve as the track as relay teams spend Friday night until dawn Saturday walking a relay to raise money.

This year’s chairwoman is Tamie Ferrell, Valley Falls, who is calling the relay an “Extreme Relay Makeover.”

A new addition will be “Cookin’ for a Cure,” with an open invitation to those who barbecue to check in at 5:30 p.m. Judging will run up to 9:30 for appetizers, baked beans, beef, pork, chicken, and dessert.

Something that has not changed is the luminaria ceremony after sunset. The lighted candles in a sack honor those who have fought cancer and those who have lost the battle.

Live and silent auctions will also be held to raise funds.
