Recital caps season for Entertainment Dance Company
Entertainment Dance Company students performed their sixth annual recital June 4 at Free State High School in Lawrence. Recitals are held at the end of the year as a chance to showcase the students’ efforts over the past several months.
Director Jennifer Cox has owned the dance studio, located in Nortonville, since 2005. “When I started the studio, we had 65 dancers and at this year’s recital we had 106,” Cox said about her record number of students.
The dancers, ranging in age from three to 18, performed 30 routines including styles of jazz, ballet, lyrical, tap, baton, ribbon, pom, and hip-hop. Out of the 106 students, 34 compete at state and national dance competitions. These dancers will be competing at Nationals in Branson, Mo., June 15-18.
Seven graduating seniors were honored after the performance. They were Gage Funk, Emily Warriner, Elizabeth Wolfe, Katie Noll, Taylor Weishaar, Savanna Bradley, and Kelsey Heinen.
Heinen, an instructor the past four years, plans to stay with the dance company for another year. Alongside her is assistant instructor Marah Koons, an upcoming senior.
Classes will continue throughout the summer and performances will be held at Old Settlers’ in Oskaloosa June 23 and Grasshopper Falls Day later this fall. Enrollment for the seventh season will be held in August as well as auditions for competition.
Cox thanked her family, students, and their parents. “It’s because of them that we have such a wonderful studio.”
