Helen Welborn

Helen Fern Welborn, 93, Lee’s Summit, Mo., died May 28, 2011.

She was born Nov. 1, 1917, in Ozawkie, the daughter of Walter and Myrtle Metzger Nesbitt.

She attended elementary and high school in Ozawkie and attended Strickler’s Business College in Topeka. She received her Certified Professional Secretary rating in 1965.

She married Lester Welborn Oct. 5, 1940. He preceded her in death Feb. 22, 2004.

Helen retired from General Motors-Leeds Plant, Kansas City, Mo., in 1975, having served as secretary to Personnel Administration Department. She was instrumental in helping to organize the “GM-Leeds Retiree Club” for salaried retirees, in 1976, serving as president for 12 years.

After she and Lester moved to John Knox Village in Lee’s Summit, in 1988 she was an active volunteer in many areas of the Village, including serving on the board of directors for five years. Helen was a member of John Knox Village Church, and served as moderator for several years.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Hendrix, Topeka; and a brother, Ronald “Bud” Nesbitt, Oskaloosa.

Services were held at Langsford Funeral Home, Lee’s Summit, Mo., June 3. Burial was in Ozawkie Cemetery.
