Donald Monroe
Donald C. Monroe, 86, Meriden, formerly of Topeka, died June 12, 2011.
He was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Jamestown, N.Y., the son Harley and Daisy Monroe.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and Korean War.
He was employed by Kansas Power and Light as well as working for 32 years at the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of First Free Methodist Church.
He married Virginia Jo Wymer Sept. 6, 1950. She preceded him in death Sept. 24, 1977. He married Evelyn Mae Robinson May 17, 1982, in Oklahoma. She survives.
Other survivors include children, Judy Grose, Berryton, Laurie Woolbright, Meriden, Bill Grubham, Lecompton, and Joe Grubham, Topeka; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great- great-grandson; three siblings, Charles Monroe, Savannah, Ga., and John Paul Monroe and Lowell Monroe, both of Jamestown, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Holly Stack; grandchildren, Amber Grubham, Ryan Stack, and Sara Stack; and two brothers, James Monroe and Richard Monroe.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, at the First Free Methodist Church, 3450 SE Indiana St., Topeka. Interment will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka.
Mr. Monroe will lie in state after 3 p.m. on Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.
