Oskaloosa eighth-graders go back-to-back in Knowledge Bowl
by Dennis Sharkey
It’s deja vu for the Oskaloosa Middle School Knowledge Bowl team.
For the second consecutive year the eighth-grade Knowledge Bowl team has won the Delaware Valley League title. The seventh-grade team also finished second in as many years.
The eighth-grade team has won the DVL Knowledge Bowl 12 times since 1987 and has been runner up seven times. The seventh-grade team has won seven times.
This year 12 northeast Kansas teams participated in the tournament that took place at Xavier in Leavenworth.
Students are asked trivia questions in the fields of history, English, science and math. Students are also given one question pertaining to current events.
The eighth-grade team defeated Jefferson County North in the finals.
The team’s sponsor, Ron Ellis, has been sponsoring the teams since 1987 and keeps a chart in his Middle School classroom that lists the champions.
Ellis said in recent years the competition has been stepped up. He said JCN along with private schools Xavier and Atchison Catholic have been pushing the Bears.
“The private schools are really putting an emphasis on it and really giving us some competition,” Ellis said.
To keep pace Oskaloosa kids practice before school, after school, on the weekends and during class when they have time.
“I push them a little bit,” Ellis said with a smile.
Ellis said Oskaloosa kids have also stayed ahead of the pack because of parent involvement.
“This is one sport you do want the parents involved,” he said. “Anything they can do to help is appreciated.”
