Local author releases e-edition of book

by Dennis Sharkey

Local author Garret Tufte’s work is now featured in cyberspace.

Tufte, a 2003 Oskaloosa High School graduate and Lawrence resident, released his first book “Billy’s Adventures” in 2009.

This past week Tufte launched an application that will make the book available through itunes for purchase.

Tufte began developing the idea for the book during his senior year at the University of Kansas where he graduated with a degree in creative writing in 2008.

The story is based on the experiences of a 12-year-old boy in a west coast town who runs away.

Tufte releases the e-edition after returning to Kansas from a trip to Italy where he spent several months studying and working for room and board. He also spent some time in England.

Tufte is currently working on another writing project but strays away from fiction. He is currently working on a memoir of his experiences over the last couple of years.

Tufte said in recent times he has fought through some personal strife and has been able to answer questions through inner searching.

The real life story began about five years ago after a personal tragedy and ended only months ago Tufte says.

“I was running with a train of thought for about five years and the train of thought ended,” he said. “I kind of found an ending.”

Tufte has trouble describing the scenario but said it felt like a dark room and being unable to describe what’s there.

“There were questions and nothing seemed to make sense,” he said. “I answered those questions and I got myself out of a hole.”

Tufte doesn’t have a timetable for the book and left the door open for other questions to present themselves in the future that could reopen his thoughts. However, he hopes his writing can help someone else in a mental dilemma.

Tufte is also busy answering questions about a variety of interests, including theories about artificial intelligence and economics.

“What I’m interested in is just about everything,” Tufte said.

He’s also promoting his ideas. Just last month Tufte held some demonstrations at Hobbs Taylor Lofts in Lawrence to anybody who would listen. Tufte is hoping the right person with some financial backing will latch onto one of his ideas.
