Foster tapped to replace Shupe as principal at Oskaloosa Elementary

Oskaloosa USD 341 has found a replacement for outgoing Elementary School Principal Darren Shupe and they didn’t have to look far.
Pat Foster, fourth-grade teacher at Oskaloosa Elementary School, has been hired to succeed Shupe and will take over July 1.
Superintendent Jon Pfau said Foster has demonstrated leadership skills on the teaching level.
“Pat has been in the district for 20 plus years and has been a leader for a lot of our school improvement initiatives,” Pfau said. “A lot of ways he has already been a teacher leader within the building.”
Pfau said board members were comfortable with Foster because of his knowledge of the district. The choice will also ensure a smooth transition in the coming months.
Foster and Shupe have had some preliminary meetings and will work together closely the next two months.
Pfau said board members were impressed with Foster’s resume on a state level as well. Foster is part of many state education committees that help formulate curriculum and set standards.
“He is well plugged in and connected,” Pfau said. “We really liked that.”
Pfau said those connections are also important in navigating the district through difficult economic times that are combined with increasing demands on educators.
“I think that’s an important thing as the stakes keep getting higher as we try and meet those standards,” he said. “More and more we are going to be talking school improvement.”
Board members also talked insurance bids at a special meeting last week. Board members were to have met again on Monday to perhaps finalize a decision on insurance.
