Polls open today for city, school elections in county

Tuesday, April 5, will be election day in Jefferson County. Voters will choose their school board members, city council and mayoral representatives, and Meadowlark Extension District board members.

Elections will also be held in five drainage districts to choose board members.

ElectionThe polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but not all of the usual 13 precincts will be open. To clarify confusion about were to vote, Election Officer Linda Buttram has published a notice in this edition explaining where to vote depending on the school district in which the voter resides.

There will be blanks on the ballot for school board positions in Valley Falls and Oskaloosa. Only Jefferson County North and Perry-Lecompton have a race for one position.

Positions 1, 2, 3, and the at large position, No. 7, are up for election in each of Jefferson County’s six school districts. McLouth has to fill Position 6, an unexpired term.

No one filed for office in Ozawkie and seats are left wanting in Meriden and Nortonville. There are no mayoral races as five of the eight are up for re-election with no opposition.

Following are the candidates for school board in the six school districts and mayor and city council in the eight cities: (‘I’ indicates incumbent)

School districts—

USD 338: Pos. 1, Jody Lockhart (I); Pos. 2, James Stevens is an announced write-in candidate; Pos. 3, Carrie Belveal; Pos. 7, Heidi Pickerell.

USD 339: Pos. 1, Ronald Langston (I); Pos. 2, James Filbert; Pos. 3, Mark Kern and Karen Edmonds (I); Pos. 7, Katherine Wolfe (I).

USD 340: Pos. 1, Scott Gibson; Pos. 2, Dreana McClurg (I); Pos. 3, Jeff Van Petten (I); Pos. 7, and Shannon McMahon (I).

USD 341: Pos. 1, Denise Selbee-Koch (I); Pos. 2, Tammy Fowler (I); Pos. 3, Gary Willits, incumbent who represented Pos. 7; Pos. 7, no one.

USD 342: Pos. 1, Nathan Jolley; Pos. 2, Andy Sullivan (I); Pos. 3, Dean Wolfe (I); Pos. 6, unexpired, Heather Coit; Pos. 7, Edward Courtney (I).

USD 343: Pos. 1, Matt Erickson (I), Pos. 2, Jamie Harwood (I), Pos.3, Jenny Morgison (I); Pos. 7, Donna Bergmann and Travis Daniels (I).

Cities—

City council and mayoral candidates:

Oskaloosa: Mayor, Mike Boyd (I); Council, John Norman and Greg Rockhold. Mayor and two council seats.

Valley Falls: Council, Patrick Reyle, Shawn Jepson, Jo Tichenor, Mark Isenberg, Todd Harrington, and Michael “Tony” Trower (I) (Trower has withdrawn but his name will be on the ballot). Three council seats.

McLouth: Mayor, Keith Meador (I); council, Karl Abegg (I) and Jim Moore. Mayor and two council seats.

Perry: Mayor, Michael Lang (I); council, Pauline King, Brian Hack, Clay McHardie, Ryan Rush, and J.R. Porter (I). Mayor and two council seats.

Meriden: Mayor, Andy Surritt (I); Council, Dana Boyer (I). Mayor and two council seats.

Ozawkie: No filings. Three council seats.

Nortonville: Council, Ray Brown (I), Matt Smith (I), and Brad Noll. Three council seats.

Winchester: Mayor, Marvin Ledbetter (I); Council, Mary Jo Swoyer (I) and Brandon Abel (I). Mayor and two council seats.

Extension board

Two candidates are running unopposed as board members in Meadowlark Extension District No. 7. They are Kim Swearngin, Lawrence, and Susan Voelker, Valley Falls.

Drainage Districts

There are three positions up for election in the five drainage districts, but there were no filings in some and ony one or two in most. They are as follows:

Kaw Delaware, Gary Starr and Russell Winsor, both Grantville; Muddy Creek, Russell Winsor, Grantville; Stonehouse, no filings; Grantville, Randy Bigham and Russell Winsor, both Grantville; Kaw Half Breed, no filings.
