McLouth’s Patriot’s Day Parade organizers looking for new ideas

by Dennis Sharkey

Without a doubt the McLouth Patriot’s Day Parade has been a huge success, but organizers want to make it even better.

Melinda Harwood, a parade committee member, said the parade highlights military personnel and veterans but they want to highlight them more.

“Because Patriot’s Day is in honor of active military service men and women and veterans we would like to highlight that and make that more of a focus,” Harwood said. “We’re trying to figure out how to do that.”

Harwood said many of the county’s veterans are not easy to find sometimes and they would like more veterans to participate in the events. She said many times veterans are modest about their service and are not looking for recognition.

Harwood said they are looking for a veteran to be the grand marshal for the parade.

Nevertheless the parade will still feature a strong theme of honoring service men and women.

In addition to the military, firefighters and rescue workers will also be honored this year in recognition of the upcoming 10th anniversary of the 9-11-2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania.

This year’s event will also have a bigger presence from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. Harwood said a total of 12 officers from the school will help with master of ceremonies and lining up participants in the children’s and regular parades.

All of the past favorites of the day including the petting zoo will be back and a World War II reenactment group that first appeared at the event last year.

After the enactment, actors broke out into groups and answered questions for the children in attendance.

Harwood said the enactment will be a different scene than what was performed last year.
