Lady Dragons’ hoop dreams end early in 2A state tournament

Senior Abbey Kearney tried to get past Lady Cardinals' sophomore Erin Harvey.

The Valley Falls Lady Dragons’ first trip to the state tournament in 25 years ended Thursday afternoon, losing to No. 4 seed Ell-Saline, 56-25, at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

The Lady Dragons held an early 4-2 lead but a 7-0 run in the final two minutes of the first period by the Lady Cardinals put Valley Falls behind 9-4. The Lady Dragons got to within four points of Ell-Saline but the Lady Cardinals went on a 15-2 run in the final four minutes of the half and lead 28-11 at the half.

In the third quarter the Lady Dragons didn’t score until the 3:33 mark when Jade Edmonds hit a three-point basket to break a 20-0 run by Ell-Saline. The Lady Dragons were held scoreless for more than eight minutes.

Senior Abbey Kearney led the Lady Dragons with eight points on 3 of 16 shooting from the field. The Lady Dragons were 5 of 16 from the free throw line and were out rebounded 33-25.
