John Nicholas Stein, 82, Valley Falls, died March 16, 2011, at Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa.
He was born Jan. 27, 1929, at Valley Falls, the son of William B. and Anna Kelly Stein. He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1947. He was in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
John was a carpenter and a business agent for Carpenters Local 1445 in Topeka. He was past commander of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Council 6671, all in Valley Falls.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bill Stein, Joe Stein, Jack Stein, Jim Stein, and Tony Stein, and two sisters, Mary Robben and Betty Reece.
Survivors include a brother, Frank Stein, Zephyr Cove, Nev.; and four sisters, Doris Akers, Osawatomie, Rita Stein and Joan Stein, both of San Francisco, Calif., and Judy Reichart, Social Circle, Ga.
Mass of Christian Burial was March 23 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Valley Falls. Burial was at the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Grahem-Herbers VFW Post.
