Brothers come together to open auto business in Winchester
by Dennis Sharkey
Three brothers from Winchester have taken on the bad economy and prevailed.
Robin, Brent and Steven Robertson have taken over Auto Tech and Tire in Winchester. The brothers took the business over from Perry automotive business owner Dustin Cox on Dec. 23, 2010.
Robin and Brent were working for Cox at the time the business was sold. Robin said he thought he might take the business over someday but he didn’t expect it to be so soon.
The business originally opened in October 2009. Robin had worked for Cox at his Perry location about four years. Robin said he was looking for a place to store some of his equipment when Cox came up with the idea to open another location.
After about a year Robin said Cox wanted out of the business and sold it to him and his brothers.
“To get a second chance at doing what you like, I think it’s kind of a gift,” Robin said.
Robin did not come into the business unexperienced. He operated another shop in the Eudora area until seven years ago when a divorce put a split between him and the business.
The business has also provided opportunities for his brothers. Brent, the oldest of the three, had been laid off from his job more than a year ago and was looking for work. Robin said the shop was having trouble keeping help when they opened which allowed Brent an opportunity to get back to work.
Steven, the youngest of the brothers, had been off work for several years after a work injury. When the opportunity came to purchase the business, Steven wanted in.
“We all just put our heads together,” Robin said.
Opening a business in the middle of a recession is somewhat risky Robin acknowledges.
“Just the way the county has welcomed us is really amazing,” he said.
Just months into solo ownership for the brothers, they’re already talking about expanding their operation into the building next door.
