Valley Falls police chief fired; no reason given

Police Chief Tammy Gross was fired last week. The Valley Falls mayor and city council held an hour-long executive session Feb. 2 followed by a 4-0 vote to dismiss Gross. Councilman Tony Trower was absent.

Mayor Charles Stutesman did not divulge the reasons. Instead Gross was told this is a “hire at will” state and no reasons for dismissal have to be given.

Gross confirmed with the newspaper that she was told the same thing.

“The mayor told me he wants to take the department in a different direction,” Gross said. She was hired in July 2003.

Stutesman said there was not any one thing that triggered the decision nor was it driven by public complaints although there had been some.

There are four part-time officers who will be providing law enforcement for the city and coverage will not be reduced, the mayor vowed.

“City administrator Chris Channell will direct the day-to-day operation and I will rely on councilman Mike Hahn to assist in managing the police department,” Stutesman said. Hahn is a former police officer.

The sheriff’s department has also been made aware of the change, the mayor said.

Channell said the city will begin advertising the position soon and he plans to have the applications on the table for the new council when it’s seated April 20.
