McLouth USD 342 hires new superintendent

by Dennis Sharkey

McLouth USD 342 officially has a new man at the top.

Steve Splichal, current assistant superintendent for Hiawatha USD 415, officially signed a two-year contract last week.

Board members approved his contract at a special meeting Tuesday, Feb. 8. The contract will pay Splichal an annual salary of $97,000. The contract also allows for 10 transitional days at $3,000 and moving expenses up to $3,000. Current Superintendent Jean Rush’s annual salary is $85,836.

Splichal’s official first day will be July 1, however, he will begin familiarizing himself with the district and the budget in the coming months.

“I’ll do everything I can to hit the ground running,” Splichal said.

Splichal said he won’t worry so much about this year’s budget because the board already has a strategic plan. Instead he will spend his time meeting with board members, staff and district patrons.

Splichal got an introduction to district patrons last week when the board recessed to attend a school achievement event in between the girls’ and boys’ basketball games. He was introduced to the crowd along with his family that includes three children who will attend McLouth schools.

Splichal also got an opportunity to meet with patrons when he interviewed for the position last month.

“I had a very positive feel for the community and what’s going on here,” he said.

Splichal said the search for a new home is already on.

Rush will remain with the district until June 30 when her contract ends. She accepted the position of superintendent for Holcomb USD 363 and she will begin that position July 1.
