Planning and Zoning Commission votes to deny permit for Meriden strip club

by Dennis Sharkey

The Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously to deny the application for a conditional use permit for Oasis Saloon on K-4 Highway outside of Meriden.

Board member Paul Johnson, rural Perry, said before the motion was made that he realizes that the issue has caused conflict and controversy but the county may also be limited in what restrictions it can place on the club. He warned those in attendance that there is no quick fix for this particular issue.

Board member Darrell Hammond, Meriden, made the motion and primarily listed issues with parking and a lack of a plan to address larger vehicles such as busses and delivery trucks.

Hammond also listed a list of conditions they would like to see if county commissioners choose to approve the application.

If county commissioners receive protest petitions from enough surrounding property owners a super majority 3-0 vote would be required for approval.
