Valley Falls will hire part-time police officers

by Clarke Davis

Valley Falls will attempt to add to its list of part-time police officers and not fill the full-time position vacated by Mark Isenberg.

The problem the council found out when it met Nov. 17 was the local pay is considerably lower than area communities.

While Valley Falls paid $8 and $9 an hour for noncertified officers and certified with no experience, other area towns are paying $12 and $13.

Valley Falls has two part-time officers who have been with the city for seven to nine years drawing $11 and $11.75 an hour.

The council increased the city’s base pay to $10 and $11, respectively, and offered the new part-time positions to its veteran officers with a $2 an hour raise.

Police Chief Tammy Gross said Doug Ashcraft was not interested and Cory Shields is considering the offer. Additional part-time officers are being sought.
