Pepsi grant talk leads to discussion about sports complex at Jefferson West

by Clarke Davis

A committee is at work in the Jefferson West district to obtain a $250,000 grant from the Pepsi Cola Company.

Sandra Mumaw, a former board member and committee member, explained that Pepsi has diverted some of its promotion money to awarding community grants.

Jefferson West school board meetingThe funds being requested would build an 80-by-40-foot building at the football and track complex to replace the old locker room and concession stand building.

A long discussion ensued as to how inadequate the present facilities are in handling the large number of students involved in sports on both the high and junior high levels.

Mumaw said the committee will submit the proposal to Pepsi and wait to see if it is accepted. If so, obtaining the grant then becomes a competitive enterprise pitting a number of communities against one another in a computer voting contest.

“The community will have to get behind it. We will have to rally everyone’s support,” she said.

Football coach Steve Johnson and track coach John Riley also spoke to the needs at the sports complex.

Riley said that it would cost about $90,000 to resurface the track but that what was needed was an expanded eight-lane track to meet new standards. He said Royal Valley had just completed one for a cost of $600,000.

Other needs include a new lighting system and a completely reworked football field.

It was noted that it would be a waste of money to try to band-aid pieces of the complex when it will probably take a bond issue and the public’s support to renovate the entire complex.

Mumaw and the Pepsi committee are planning along these lines and should the district be given the grant, the new building would be so located as to fit into a newly redesigned complex.

The board has been told that the district will soon be debt free including the bonds on the high school, which pay off in 2012. Two techology lease payments and a lease on four buses all pay off this year.
