A semi-truck load of hogs overturned just north of the US-59 and K-4 junction at Nortonville shortly after 9 a.m. Nov. 19.

The driver, Justin Meyer, 20, Bremen, was transported by county ambulance to the Atchison Hospital for treatment of injuries.

According to the Highway Patrol report, the truck was northbound in the far right lane when the load shifted. The 2006 Peterbilt tractor-trailer flipped on the passenger side and came to rest in the east ditch.

There were 163 fat hogs on the load headed for Atchison; 41 were killed. Undersheriff Bob Chartier said Nortonville Farm Supply provided panels to corral the hogs and Hollis Trucking, Valley Falls, hauled the hogs from the wreck site.

Nortonville fire volunteers assisted and the scene was cleared by 2:45 p.m.
