Howard Hysten

Howard E. Hysten, 68, Valley Falls, died Nov. 14, 2010, at the Colmery-O’Neil V.A. Medical Center in Topeka.

He was born July 14, 1942, at Ozawkie, the son of Alonzo Howard and Helen A. Bratton Hysten. He was a 1960 graduate of Ozawkie Rural High School. He attended Washburn University for two years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Germany during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1967.

He had worked as a computer programmer at the Santa Fe offices for over 20 years and had formerly worked at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Topeka.

He was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Topeka and was a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge in Topeka.

He married Betty E. Goolsby April 26, 1969, at Topeka. They divorced.

He is survived by two daughters, Charita R. Hysten, Dallas, Texas, and Charella J. Hysten, Denver; two brothers, Robert Hysten, Topeka, and Roland Hysten, Atchison; three sisters, Henrietta Taylor, Annabelle Birch, and Shirley Whichard, all of Topeka; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Guy Hysten, his parents and a stepmother, Gussie M. Moore Hysten.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Burial will be at Ozawkie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, prior to services at the funeral home.
