New city administrator coming to Valley Falls

by Clarke Davis

Christopher Channell, the mayor of Hays, has been hired as the Valley Falls city administrator. His start date is Oct. 25.

Christopher ChannellChannell, 42, spent a half hour in executive session with the mayor and city council prior to the regular Oct. 6 meeting. The council unanimously approved his contract with an annual salary of $45,000 and full benefits.

He stayed for the remainder of the meeting and left to return to Hays about 8:30 p.m.

Channell is a divorced father of two daughters. He was an Ellis County Commissioner for eight years and has been a city councilman for the past 3 1/2 years. He is employed by USD 489 as a safety supervisor. He assumed the mayor’s title last spring.

Retiring from the position is Terry Urban, also formerly from Hays who was hired by the Susan Grey administration in September 2008.

Urban never moved to Valley Falls, a requirement under city ordinance. He decided to take his retirement, rather than move here.

Channell is looking for housing.
