The Jefferson West girls’ golf team ended its season Monday as the state runner-up in Class 4A missing the championship by a mere two strokes to Andale, the host team playing on their home course.

Andale finished the day with a team score of 366 while Jefferson West had 368. Chanute placed a distant third, 11 strokes behind the Tigers, 377.

“The results give the Lady Tigers a total of seven championships and three runner-up finishes for the season,” said coach Larry Kennedy.

The Tiger girls captured their first substate championship Oct. 12.

There were 12 teams and 92 girls participating in the state meet held at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.

Individuals leading the way for the team were Jade Brake, who ended the season with a top 10 state medal, placing ninth by winning a three-way playoff; Abbie Thelen, who won a state medal by placing 17th; Tana Kern, who finished in the top 25; Ally West, who made a great comeback on her second nine holes to secure the team’s second place finish; Kati Richmond, who also came back strong and ensured the team would win any tiebreakers; and Madison Fangman, a freshman who got her first state tournament experience and played admirably.

The state individual champ is Jacie Scheer from Cheney who finished with a 76.

“We appreciate everyone’s support this fall,” Kennedy said. “We now wish the best to the other fall sports, cross country, football, and volleyball, as they finish their seasons.” Larry Deiter is the assistant golf coach.
