JCN conducting survey for baseball, softball
by Dennis Sharkey
An effort is under way to find out if JCN USD 339 residents want a baseball or softball team for students.
The district is currently conducting a survey of patrons to gauge the interest in the high school fielding a team. Superintendent Dr. Tim Marshall said it’s a topic that has been discussed informally in the community since he has been superintendent. Recently a patron approached the board about fielding a team. Marshall said that prompted board members to conduct the survey.
The survey will close Monday, Nov. 1, and board members will review the results at the next board meeting Nov. 8.
One hurdle for fielding teams would be a lack of facilities. The district does not have a suitable baseball diamond. However, Marshall doesn’t think that would prohibit the school from having a team. He said it is possible the teams could play all of their games away.
“It is true that we do not host home track meets and we still have a pretty stout track team,” Marshall said. “It’s possible we could run a program without all of the facilities we would like to have.”
Paying for the sports could also be a hurdle, although Marshall said some supporters have said there could be minimal costs associated with the programs if they received donations and were self-funded by the students. However, Marshall said he prefers to see programs funded through a regular budget process.
Neither of the sports have been played in the district since consolidation in the 1960s.
