Historical Society seeks annexation for recent property acquisition

The city of Oskaloosa’s land area may soon grow slightly.

At a city council meeting earlier this month City Clerk Patty Hamm said she has been approached by the Jefferson County Historical Society about annexing a strip of land that is adjacent to Old Jefferson Town. Hamm said the strip of land was recently acquired by the Society and they may consider building a maintenance shed on the land. The strip of land is located behind the buildings at Old Jefferson Town.

City Superintendent Bill Heard said that city services extend to the Old Jefferson Town property, but not to the strip of land in question. He said if the Society wanted sewer service to the property they would probably have to install a pump.

City Attorney Jan Hayes said the Society would have to petition the city for annexation.

In other actions:

  • The city’s curb project is nearing completion. Heard said some parts of the sidewalks around the square have to be cut out because of cracking. He said the contractor, David Yoder, will replace the sidewalks at no charge except for the cost of materials.
  • The city accepted a bid by Ed Hattemer to purchase a used pick-up truck from the city. Hattemer’s bid was $1,019.
  • The council approved a proposal from Lowenthal, Webb, and Odermann P.A. to conduct the city’s 2010 financial audit. The cost will not exceed $6,180. Last year’s audit contract was not to exceed $5,600. The firm has conducted the city’s audit for at least 10 years although they recently changed their name.
  • Hamm said the city had an inquiry about a portable smoked meats stand operating within the city limits. Hamm said the person would operate a stand in the parking lot of the Thriftway Store and that the business owner requested to leave the trailer at the parking lot throughout the week. Hamm said this is not the first portable concession stand in the city. She said a few years ago a portable coffee shop operated from the same location.
