Alfred Meiners

Alfred F. Meiners, Ph.D., 82, Kansas City, Mo., died Sept. 21, 2010.

Dr. Meiners was born into the large Meiners-Hodes family of Kansas City June 5, 1928, to Alfred H. and Sabina Meiners. He attended DeLaSalle High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Rockhurst College, a master’s degree at University of Missouri–Kansas City and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Purdue University.

He married Mary Ann Ryan in October 1958 as he started his career with Midwest Research Institute. After 35 years, he retired from MRI and started his second career with Burns and McDonnell Waste Consultants and then the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before his second retirement the end of 1999.

He is survived by wife of 53 years; two daughters, Sarah Zilliox and Amy Alexander; two granddaughters; a brother, Hugh Meiners, St. Louis, Mo., and a brother-in-law, Tom Ryan, Valley Falls.

He was preceded in death by a son, James Alfred Meiners.

Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 24 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Kansas City, Mo. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Odyssey VistaCare Hospice Foundation, Parkinson’s Foundation of the Heartland or the Christ the King Food Pantry.
