ABATE organizers report a smooth weekend for rally
by Dennis Sharkey
As promised, the organizers of last month’s ABATE motorcycle rally gave a report to the county commissioners Monday concerning the rally.
Organizer Vickie Boose reported that there was minimal contact between patrons and the sheriff’s department. Boose said there were only two calls the entire weekend. One call was for a non-injury accident report and the other call was made by ABATE organizers because of a traffic problem on 118th Street.
The only suggestion was made by Chairman Richard Malm. He suggested using a few more slow speed signs.
Boose also said after the meeting that entertainer Galagher was well received. A total of about 4,500 people attended the event.
In other actions:
- The Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Commission is once again looking for a seventh member. Commissioners thought they had the seat filled last month when they appointed Mary Prewitt to the seat. However, Prewitt has submitted a resignation letter to the county because of a conflict of interest. Planning and Zoning Director Eloise Tichenor said Prewitt indicated in her resignation that she is employed by the Kansas Supreme Court as an attorney and that she had been informed that she could not serve.
- Health Department Director Eileen Filbert met with the board to discuss a lift station inside Sewer District No. 2. Filbert said there have been continual problems with the pumps and one is being prepared to be fixed but further repairs may be needed. Costs to repair the entire system could approach $3,500, however, the district only has about $830 left in its maintenance fund. Filbert said the county may have to supplement the district with monies from the general fund until the next half of assessments are collected. The board also met in closed session with Filbert.
