Vashti Dick

Vashti A. Dick, 97, Perry, died Sept. 30, 2006, at Aldersgate Village Care Center in Topeka.

She was born April 6, 1909, in rural Ozawkie, the daughter of Harry Albert “H.A.” and Ethel Hall Ploughe. She was a lifelong resident of the Perry and Ozawkie areas.

Mrs. Dick was a homemaker and was involved in farming with her husband in the Kaw Valley near Perry for many years. She was a 1926 graduate of Perry rural High School and attended Washburn University. Mrs. Dick was a member of the Perry United Methodist Church and “Hope” Club Extension Unit in Perry.

She was married to Vernet Clayton “Casey” Dick Feb. 24, 1934, at Topeka. He preceded her in death Aug. 31, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle Plummer. Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Services were Oct. 3 at the Perry United Methodist Church with graveside services at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Perry United Methodist Church or to Heart of America Hospice and sent in care of Barnett-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, P.O. Box 416, Oskaloosa, 66066.

Dorothy Casto

Dorothy Elizabeth “Betty” Casto, 83, Topeka, died Oct. 6, 2006, at Stormont-Vail HeathCare.

She was born March 21, 1923, in Lecompton, the daughter of Theodore Joseph and Alice Elizabeth Polley Sulzen. She was an alumna of Lecompton High School.

She married Marvin C. Casto Aug. 31, 1945, in Topeka. He preceded her in death March 18, 2001. She was also preceded in death by one son, Edward Lee “Bud” Casto Sept. 14, 1971, a grandson, Daryl Jay Casto, Dec. 28, 1997, and a granddaughter, Angela L. Doll, Sept. 9, 2000. Survivors include one daughter, LaRita Marie McLain, Euless, Texas; two sons, Donald R. Casto, Meriden, and James D. Casto, Topeka; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Avenue, Topeka. Burial will follow at the Meriden Cemetery.

Micky Grubb

Micky Lew Grubb, 44, Topeka, died Oct. 2, 2006, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 17, 1961, in Topeka, the son of Melvin and Connie Kay Chilcoat Grubb. He was a 1979 graduate of Jefferson West High School.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1979, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer after 22 years. He participated in the liberation of Kuwait and was involved in numerous naval operations throughout the world.

He married Lynn Heinen in 1985. They divorced after 18 years of marriage. He was a member of Northland Christian Church, Topeka. He was preceded in death by his father Aug. 16, 1996, and by his grandfather, Wilbur Grubb. Survivors include two daughters, Ashley and Katelyn Grubb, Ozawkie; his fiance, Debbi Nurnberg; his mother, Connie Grubb, Topeka; two sisters, Kristi, Lawrence, and Angela, Topeka; a brother, Ron Grubb, Topeka; and grandparents, Marvin and Fern Chilcoat, Topeka, and Norma Grubb, Dover.

A funeral service was held Oct. 6 at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, Topeka, with burial in the Ozawkie Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Micky Lew Grubb Memorial Fund and sent in care of Kaw Valley State Bank and Trust, 1944 NW Topeka Blvd., Topeka, 66608.
