Davis Publications launches updated website

Jefferson County residents have a new source for news and weather with the launch of JeffCountyNews.com’s newly updated website.

The website offers local stories and photos from the Valley Falls Vindicator and the Oskaloosa Independent, national headlines, up-to-the-minute local weather, as well as local and national video.

“We’re not breaking news on the improved site,” said Monty Davis, who developed and maintains the site for Davis Publication Inc.

“We’re just taking what’s best in the newspaper and putting it on the web. It will have more of a newsmagazine feel to it.”

JeffCountyNews.com was launched four years ago as a supplement to the newspapers and to serve as a web portal to Jefferson County’s municipal, school and organizational websites.

“The printed products are still the top priority,” Davis said. “This just supplements. It’s a marketing tool for the newspapers, as well as the county.”

Currently, the site carries national advertising, but in the future will offer opportunities for local and regional businesses to advertise on the site.

The new website features a current weather ticker from AccuWeather.com, breaking national and international news from CNN.com and local and popular videos from JeffCountyNews.com and YouTube. The site also continues to offer links to all of Jefferson County’s school districts, cities and other entities.

“Another thing that’s new about this site is that its database driven,” Davis said. “That means it’s searchable.”

Davis explained if readers are interested in a local issue, they can put in keywords in the search box and find all the stories that have been published on the subject in the newspapers.

Davis stressed that the site is still a work in progress and viewers will see changes in color schemes and functionality in the coming weeks all in an attempt to make the site more dynamic and user friendly.  That could mean the site will offer Web 2.0 social media applications such as viewer polls, Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds and e-mail updates to allow viewers to interact with the newspapers.

“We want JeffCountyNews.com to be your starting point everyday for the latest in local and national news, weather and entertainment,” Davis said.
