4-H Family of the Year award to Mohneys

by Davis Publications staff

The Chuck and Patti Mohney family of Meriden was honored as the 4-H Family of Year at the annual Achievement Banquet Saturday night.

The family includes two sons, Brent, a senior at Fort Hays State University, and Garret, a senior at Jefferson West High School. Both have been or are members of the Clover Power 4-H Club.

Chuck was a 4-H club member for 11 years. He joined the Nesbitt 4-H Club in Ozawkie in 1962. That club dissolved and the Lucky Lake 4-H Club was formed.

While a 4-H member Chuck served on the concession stand committee and is now a concession stand co-superintendent. He received the Key Award, the Ferguson Scholarship, and the Alumni Award. He served as a camp counselor during his college years.

He has served as a member of the Extension Council Executive Board and the 4-H Fair Improvement Committee. He is employed as a program coordinator for a company that provides support for people with developmental disabilities.

Patti was a 4-H member of the Jayhawker’s 4-H Club in Shawnee County. She has served on the fashion revue committee and has been a chaperone for the 4-H Global Youth Conference in Kansas City.

Patti is a nurse and has been employed with St. Francis Health Center for 29 years.

Brent and Garret were involved in plant science, aerospace, woodworking, clothing, shooting sports, foods, bicycle, dogs, and arts and crafts. They are also active with school activities, Boy Scouts, sports, church and community activities.

Brent is an Eagle Scout. He received the I Dare You Award, represented Jefferson County at the International Youth Leadership Camp in New Hampshire, and the 4-H Global Conference in Kansas City.

He was involved in setting up for the fair, cleaning up, helping as a night watchman, and the concession stand for several years.

Garret is an 11-year 4-H member. He has held offices in the club and participated in the 4-H carnival, fair set up and clean up, achievement banquet, concession stands and many 4-H fund raisers. He has assisted with different fair committees. He is also a Boy Scout and he helps with God’s Storehouse.

The Family of the Year Award is a tradition started by the late Roy and Ruby Freer and has been continued by Bill and Arleta Manville, who made the presentation.

The Mohney family was presented with a plaque and cake.
