PLHS dedicates new gymnasium to Coach Morgison

by Carolyn Kaberline

“We can never repay Coach Morgison for all that he has done for all of us and our community, but we’re going to try,” PLHS basketball Coach Jeff Dickson said as he began the dedication ceremony for the new PLHS gym.

The ceremony took place between the girls and boys games on Friday, Feb. 1.

“That is why that from now on the court in this gym will be known as the Floyd Morgison Court. Every team that sets foot on Floyd Morgison Court will know the legacy of hard work and doing things the right way that they will have to live up to.”

Morgison began his teaching and coaching career at Perry-Lecompton High School with the 1974-1975 school year. After 16 years as head boys’ basketball coach, his record of 210-151 proved him to be the most successful coach in any sport at Perry-Lecompton High School. In addition, his teams earned several league championships and trips to the state tournament; one of those trips saw the Kaws place fourth in state competition.

“I was really pleased with the number that showed up,” Morgison said of his former players that returned for the dedication ceremony. “This is a great honor and something you never think of happening.”

“Coach Morgison has maintained an over 30-year association with USD 343,” Dickson said. “He has been a father, a mentor, and an inspiration to several generations of students.”

And judging from those who attended the dedication ceremony and reception, there were lots of others who thought so too.
