Thursday, January 25, 2007 Two mayoral races, three primaries slated by Clarke Davis Nine people had filed for three council seats in McLouth causing a primary election to be held there when the filing deadline passed at noon Tuesday. Primary elections will also be required to thin the candidates running for the at large Position 7 in USD 340, Jefferson West, and Position 1 in USD 343, Perry-Lecompton. Races for the office of mayor have been created in Meriden and Perry while school board positions in three school districts are going begging. Only one incumbent filed for re-election in USD 338, Valley Falls, where two positions will have to be filled by write-in votes. One was left blank in USD 339, Jefferson County North, and one in USD 343, Perry-Lecompton. The following have filed for city offices (‘I’ indicates incumbent): Valley Falls— Three council seats, Mitchell Barnett, Paul Burns, Mark Boyce, Susan Grey (I), Bruce Gunther, and Michael Trower. Meriden—Mayor, Andy Surritt (I) and Dennis Schnacker; Four council seats, Colleen McGenney (I), Marilyn Johnson (I), Kevin Bell, and Dana Boyer (I). Perry—Mayor, Mike Lang (I) and Dean Sage; Two council seats, Penny McHardie, Dean Sage (I), and J.R. Porter (I). Ozawkie—Three council seats, Mark Larson, Elke Lassiter (I), Steve Stanton, Marlin Youngquist (I), and Mark Roberts. Nortonville—Three council seats, Matthew Smith (I), Raymond Brown (I), Steve Belveal, and Edward “Pete” Scott. McLouth—Three council seats, Keith Meador, Curtis Woodhead, Tom Burns, George Bowen Jr., Jerry Sullivan, Charles Karmann, Myra Harwood, Bob Ryan (I), and Sharon Lobb Johnson (I). Winchester—Mayor, Jim Clark (I); Two council seats, Marie Riley (I) and Marvin Ledbetter (I). Oskaloosa—Mayor, Judy Miller (I); Two council seats, Kelly Hattemer (I) and James Malsbury (I). Filing for the four school board member positions in the six districts are: (There are five openings at Oskaloosa) USD 338, Valley Falls—Pos. 2, Paul Brown; Pos. 7, Bobbi Kearney. USD 340, Jefferson West—Pos. 1, Blaine Moore (I) and Kirk Fast; Pos. 2, Dreana McClurg and Linda Jones-Giltner; Pos. 3, Jeffrey Van Petten (I); Pos. 7, Angela Forshee, Karen Kiefat, and Shannon McMahon. USD 341, Oskaloosa—Pos. 1, Denise Selbee-Koch; Pos. 2, Tammy Fowler; Pos. 3, Daryl Chess (I); Pos. 5, Jon Henry; Pos. 7, Gary Willits (I). USD 342, McLouth—Pos. 1, Michael Tullis and Julie Zule (I); Pos. 2, Andy Sullivan (I); Pos. 3, Dan Evans (I); Pos. 7, James DePriest (I) and Edward Courtney. There is still time to file for a seat on the Meadowlark Extension District board or of the six drainage districts in Jefferson County. That deadline is Feb. 28. Primary elections will be held where needed Feb. 27. The general election is April 3.
